Naupaka kahakai (beach naupaka) is the first indigenous plant I learned about when I moved to Hawaiʻi. I was at a beach with my roommate when I noticed bright naupaka flowers peeking out from the bushes. I remarked to her about how unique the half-flowers looked and she told me the story of Naupaka and Kauʻi.
